Symposium

Saturday 30 September & Sunday 1 October

This two-day event features a special lecture, workshops, artist performances, panel discussions including talks by visiting national and international artists. A lively and active event of exchange which will foster audience participation, expanding on the role and practices of contemporary art in public space.
Site 1: Christchurch Art Gallery, Philip Carter Family Auditorium

2-5pm: Day One

2-3pm: Special Lecture: Tyler Cann, “Kinetic Sculpture Inside/Out”
Tyler Cann is Len Lye curator at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, and a PHD Candidate at Harvard University, studying Kinetic Art of the 1960s-1970s with a special focus on Len Lye. His lecture will discuss issues of spectatorship, participation and movement in public sculpture, with particular reference to that of Len Lye and its posthumous incarnations in New Zealand.
 
3-4pm: David Cross, Senior Lecturer, Massey University, Wellington, will host a panel discussion with Jeroen Jongeleen and Otto Karvonen.
 
4-5pm: Geoff Stahl, Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University, hosts a panel discussion titled “Playing with art: scenes from a ‘creative city” with Remco Schuurbiers and Bijan Dawallu from Ping Pong Country.

2-5pm: Day Two

2-3pm: Natasha Conland, co-curator of the SCAPE Biennial hosts a panel discussion titled "Forgiving sculpture, on the physical gesture in public space" with James Angus, Simon Denny and Ronnie van Hout

3-4pm: Artist David Hatcher hosts a Public Meeting and discussion titled “Art and its Uses” collaborating with local body officials, visitors, and experts to define actions and outcomes for public space. The meeting will be co-chaired by Morgan Thomas (Lecturer in the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury).

4-5pm:
Susanne Jaschko, co-curator of the 2006 SCAPE Biennial will host a panel discussion on “Beyond spectacle: media art in public space” with Mathew Biederman, Johannes Gees and Sean Kerr
