Indoor Exhibition

The theme for the 2006 SCAPE Biennial of Art in Public Space is don’t misbehave! — a directive with an ironic twist. Working with public space brings to the fore the rules and preoccupations which influence contemporary art in the public realm. don’t misbehave! highlights works that playfully inhabit public space, intervening with the regulations which govern, private, public and commercial occupation of that space. This year’s Biennial intersperses works of art throughout the central urban area, with this exhibition at the Christchurch Art Gallery providing a focal point.

The exhibition at the Gallery draws together works focusing on behaviour in public space from a variety of positions. While not created for exhibition in public space, they reveal the experience and expectation of that space in contemporary life. Seven new works were made on site in Christchurch as an artistic response to the don’t misbehave! theme. These works resonate with the unspoken aspects of public space and the mythological or fictional aspects of the local urban area. Others still engage with the conventions of behaviour within this and other urban areas. All works in the exhibition provide ample opportunity for reflecting upon the changing nature of this area we define as shared space, and create grounds for unruly artistic behaviour.
