A visit during the opening weekend promises performances, symposia, and panel discussions, making this an ideal time to sample outstanding contemporary art in public space from New Zealand and abroad. The 2-day symposium invites you to engage with SCAPE 2006 artists, curators and theoreticians to have a lively debate on contemporary art in public space.

SCAPE 2006 Symposium: 2-5pm (day one)

Including contributions from Tyler Cann (curator Len Lye at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery), Geoff Stahl (Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University), David Cross (Senior Lecturer, Massey University) and SCAPE06 artists Otto Karvonen, Jeroen Jongeleen, Remco Schuurbiers and Bijan Dawallu.

Extraordinary theatre/music/live performance by this renowned British artist and his colleagues.

The Christchurch Menetekel: 7pm – 12am
The Former Government Life, Tower Building, Cathedral Square
Collaborative text projection by Swiss artist Johannes Gees, taking its cue from the flaming Hand of God as described in the Book of Daniel. The audience is invited to take sides in a battle of words with the artist. Bring your mobile phone!
Ping Pong Country: 8.30pm – 12am
SOFA Gallery, The Arts Centre, Worcester Boulevard
Dutch/German collaborative duo Remco Schuurbiers and Bijan Dawallu present Ping Pong Country, a mixed media fusion event, challenging audiences to decide between ping pong competition, country sounds and a list of rules to game with.

6pm-7pm: Public space as communal space – can art foster the development of public sphere?
Christchurch Art Gallery, Philip Carter Family Auditorium
Curators, Natasha Conland and Susanne Jaschko discuss art in public space with national and international SCAPE 2006 artists. This discussion will focus on artworks that relate directly to the community and the different forms public art uses to stimulate audiences.

John Hardwick-Smith, Director of Athfield Architects, and award-winning landscape architect Megan Wraight from the landscape architecture firm, Wraight & Associates reflect on new approaches to art in public space. John and Megan are co-designers of Wellington Waterfront’s impressive Waitangi Park and Taranaki Wharf development. Together they will speak on the importance of context in the design of and inclusion of art in public spaces.

Take a bus trek through the city’s contemporary art galleries. Designed to provide a sense of community and encourage an exploration of the culture of the inner city, Art Trek offers a unique social arts experience for those who are not regular gallery visitors, and those who are more familiar with the city’s galleries.
