ESCAPE no:1
SCAPE 2006 Biennial of Art in Public Space
don’t misbehave!
Tena koutou. Kia ora.
It is that time once more. The 4th SCAPE biennial is upon us. Earlier in the year the theme for SCAPE 2006 was launched: don’t misbehave! - with our two star curators Natasha Conland and Susanne Jaschko. Our theme saucily alludes to ways art can temporarily expand, contract, evaporate, rotate, augment, subvert, invert, revert and pervert perceptions of public space in Christchurch. We are going to turn the heat up Garden City style.
This year’s international mix of emerging and established artists is truly stellar. Included among the 20 visiting artists are: 2001 Turner Prize-winner Martin Creed (United Kingdom), Dutch/German collaborative duo Remco Schuurbiers and Bijan Dawallu (their fusion installation event will bring new meaning to ping pong and country music – we’ll let you ponder that one), Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa and Scandinavians Otto Karvonen and Anu Pennanen (Finland).
From across the Tasman ditch, James Angus and Emil Goh will present new site-specific work. From here at home we have highly regarded New Zealand artists Mladen Bizumic, David Clegg, Adam Hyde, Ronnie van Hout, Dane Mitchell, Eve Armstrong, Simon Denny and Sriwhana Spong.
SCAPE 2006 runs from 30 September to 12 November. Opening week 29 September (the Opening Preview) – 8 October will bring a major carnival atmosphere to Christchurch, a busy period including public programmes (performances, art events, symposia) and lively gatherings around the new works commissioned for SCAPE 2006. More details (as available) can be found on the website: www.scapebiennial.org.nz
Are you ready?
No reira, nga mihi kia koutou.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CURATORS
There is a lot to be excited about with an international event that draws together a city. Giving artists the chance to produce new work and seeing how people perceive this is equally exciting. We are thrilled by the vision of a biennial that unfolds its entire potential to reach its audience both on an emotional and intellectual level. SCAPE is becoming a truly international event and a focal point for international understanding of New Zealand contemporary art.

A MESSAGE FROM ART & INDUSTRY
Hello and welcome to SCAPE 2006 don’t misbehave!
Launched in 1999 to provide a collaborative, creative meeting ground for industry, public funders, contemporary visual artists, and to spark context-specific art throughout Christchurch, SCAPE is New Zealand’s only international contemporary art biennial dedicated to public art. Established with an international focus from the beginning. The participating SCAPE 2006 artists will be responding to public space within the local built and social environment.
For SCAPE 2006, we at Art & Industry have resculpted our original brief. This year we are going to bring Christchurch six surprising weeks of artistic intervention, new ideas and new experiences for all involved.
We hope we’ll see you there.
